Acortando el texto de un tweet sin cortar los enlaces dentro

Tengo una cadena como esta:

I love @kevinrose 's new website Link 

Y tengo esta función:

Si corto la pantalla a 50, terminará siendo algo que:

Lo cual, por supuesto, matará al html.

¿Hay alguna manera fácil de evitar cortar la etiqueta a href (antes o preferiblemente después) sin romper el código HTML?

Necesito mantener mis tags, por supuesto.

Aquí hay un método un poco más corto. No recorre el árbol DOM, pero funcionará para casi todas las situaciones.

Este método primero quita todas las tags html del contenido (por lo que las tags html tampoco se contarán para la longitud de la cadena). Entonces, si la cadena necesita ser truncada, la trunca y vuelve a insertar todas las tags html.
